I get pretty good grades, so I'm not that bad in my classes. I just dont find it very interesting. Its just hard for me to find pipe flow or saturation curves the stuff we learn in class interesting no matter how hard I try. As a kid I would always tinker with electronics and self teach myself.
As a result, I am pretty handy with the soldering iron and am pretty familiar with basic electronic components. In general, I find electrical stuff very interesting and think I would have made a better electrical engineer.
I also managed to score myself a fairly high paid summer job working for an oil company. Its a pretty ok job, but I just dont think I can get myself interested in flowing gas, well measurements, compressor engines, or etc Sure beats flipping burgers, but still nothing too particularly interesting or exciting. So I'm just wondering if anyone else had felt they made a wrong choice in the type of engineering to go into? Perhaps the work life of a chemical engineer isnt as dull as the stuff we have to learn in class?

But I chose to do electrical Just curious I started in Chem E, and was awarded a 5-year scholarship in a pulp-and-paper track, but by that time, I had decided that I hated the grind, and dumped engineering for a double major in English literature and Philosopy. My first job out of college after a stint in construction Fate intervenes. I did regret it, but made a change. Those were happy times. Someone coerced me into civil engineering, I figured it'd be like building with legos.
Legos were rarely if ever brought out, so I switched to mechanical. It was kinda like civil, but with more air conditioning.
So I switched to engineering physics. Almost back to the starting point, but at least I stayed on the four year track. I'm in ME right now. In the last few years I figured out that being a computer programmer isn't that much fun after all It's funny because when I finished high school I knew I certainly didn't want to do any engineering. The mindset and personality between the two cultures is close, but not close enough that there isn't a lot of confusion and frustration between the two groups when anything serious has to be done.

Unless of course you think that a conversation about computational fluid dynamics or the thermal expansions of various gases is interesting. I've been studying chemical engineering for more than 3 years now it's a bloody 4 year course by the way , and I've found that it changed me from a bubbly teen into a boring, depressing young adult. The sole reason that I took up chemical engineering was due to 5 reasons; 1 - I was good in maths, physics and chemistry 2 - Engineers make good money 3 - Money 4 - Money 5 - Money So there.
I've regretted my choice of study a fair bit, so I'm here to warn all highschool graduates that are considering the path that I've taken. I've listed down some facts that might help you make your decision easier. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure there are many many people that will find chemical engineering interesting, but I'm not one of them.
These are things that they don't tell you at the career fair. So, you might want to consider another career if you; 1. Can't do calculus - You must be able to do double and triple integrations and know partial derivatives like the back of your hand. Or at least be interested in it.
I haven't met anyone that loves to do calculus, but if this is you then definitely consider engineering. You'll have to spend most of your time either on spreadsheets, or writing reports. Excel and Word will be your bread and butter, respect them, and they will respect you. I have gone through weeks where I slept less than 20 hours. So you must either be a a very very good student that can complete all assignments in 5 hours or less, b make extremely good use of your time or c must be able to stay awake at night.
If you don't wear glasses, expect to wear them after your course. Sooner or later, you'll have to be dangling from a ladder taking samples or tightening bolts. If you are not careful, you might encounter an unfortunate accident like the idiot here.
Enclosed spaces are very dangerous and your lecturers will pound it into your head that you should NEVER enter one without proper equipment. However, there will come a time where you will need to enter a tank, chamber or something of the sort. If you pass out and die, that would be very unfortunate. Even if you are a consulting engineer, you must at least go through a period of physical labour during your internship. So be ready for that. If you can't voice out your opinions, you won't be able to do shit.
If you don't have any opinions or suggestions, you are screwed mate. This applies to public speaking as well. Most of the flammable solvents are odourless. They smell pungent because they have an additive that makes them smell. So if you are in a factory, smell something pungent and the first thing you do is giggle and go "Siapa kentut? My point is, that you must have a good knowledge of what is dangerous and what isn't. Most engineers I've talked to don't know that fine powders are flammable.
I've worked at factories where technicians are welding next to vibrating sieves and dust is everywhere. You must know for example, that if you stick your head into a drum of perchloro ethylene, you're gonna die sooner or later. So if you are a daredevil, please please please choose another career. It will be safer for you, and safer for the people working with you.
OK OK , this post is getting very long so I'll stop here. There still are many aspects of chemical engineering that I didn't know about when I chose this path. For example the lack of chemistry related material in the course. If you think chemical engineering is all about chemistry, you are very very wrong. I think we use physics and math more than chemistry. But I will stop at this point. If anyone wants more information, leave a comment and I might write an update.
